Training School 1

  • DESCRIPTION
  • PROGRAM AND PRESENTATION

GroupThe first geological storage of CO2 training school for the second phase of CAGS was held in Chengdu, China from 14th to 17th of October 2013.  The school was hosted by the Sichuan Clean Development Mechanism Centre (SCDMC), with assistance from the Administrative Centre for China's Agenda 21 (ACCA21) and Geoscience Australia.

The training school was attended by 30 students, including 29 postgraduates and young professionals from 12 Chinese universities and research institutes, and one PhD exchange student to China from Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh). A total of 15 speakers from China, Australia, UK, USA and New Zealand gave presentations at the training school.

The school was divided into five sessions covering many aspects of CO2 geological storage including: CCUS overview; CO2 technology; CO2 storage potential, site characterisation and selection; CO2 storage monitoring and safety assessment; and the economics of CCUS.

Each session included presentations and group discussions. The presentations explained key issues, discussed past experiences, and explored the future outlook for CCS. After gaining a basic knowledge of CCS, the students were given opportunities in group discussions to actively engage in finding possible solutions to CCS issues, such as social acceptance, technical difficulties, and safety concerns. Many students asked questions, shared their experience, and sometimes proposed innovative solutions.

Feedback received was positive. The training school was regarded as a great learning, knowledge sharing and networking opportunity for participating students and experts.
